43 - The Assassins - Os Assassinos

Osama bin Laden was disposed of. Good riddance, at long last, of an infamous murderer. Ensconced where everybody knew he would be, one of the deviously pious countries where the rule of law is merely a secular wish. Religious banditry is nothing new, but with him it went global.

The sect of the “Assassins” existed during the Dark Ages, from the 11^th to the 13^th centuries, when the Persians dominated the Middle East. They inhabited mountain fortresses and were trained killers, “users of hashish”, responsible for the elimination of any authorities opposing their leader, "the old man of the mountain” and the sect’s beliefs. Sounds familiar?

Nothing much changed since then, in that awkward region of the world.

Osama bin Laden foi eliminado. Até que enfim o mundo se vê livre de um famigerado assassino. Escondido onde todos sabiam que ele estaria, um dos países de religiosidade tortuosa, nos quais o respeito pela lei é apenas um desejo secular. O banditismo religioso não é nada de novo, mas com ele tornou-se global.

A seita dos "Assassinos" existiu durante a Idade das Trevas, dos séculos 11 a 13, quando os Persas dominavam o Médio Oriente. Habitavam fortalezas nas montanhas e foram assassinos treinados, "os drogados com haxixe", responsáveis pela eliminação de quaisquer autoridades que se opusessem ao seu líder, "o velho homem da montanha" e às crenças da seita. Soa familiar?

Pouca coisa mudou desde então, naquela estranha região do mundo.
